Hazel Lim & Ginette Chittick
Ginette
Chittick
Ginette Chittick (b.1976,
Singapore) a visual artist whose background in the Punk, Indie and DIY culture is a member of one of Singapore’s seminal ArtRock/Shoegaze bands, Astreal. She was also the founder of the local Riotgrrrl chapter, a prolific punk musician and zinester in the 90s underground music scene.
Starting her graphic design exploration with grimy photostating machines, dot matrix printers, typewriters and cut-up-&-paste techniques, Ginette delved into the themes of sexual identity, Riot Grrrl, punk rock ideology and feminism in one huge slugfest of personal narratives. Originally trained as a web/graphic designer, her exploration into the realms of music, fashion, art, textiles/fibre and photography has led her to work on the themes of love, memory and experience, and the blurring of lines between the worlds of the three. Punk Rock imagery still influences much of her work as does the DIY ideology which pervades her process of making. With her experiments with handspun yarn composed of locally harvested kapok and merino wool, she revisits her punk roots of anti-consumerism and self-made material.
Her work has been shown as festivals ResFest International Animation and Film Festival (’05), OneDotZero International Digital Film Festival (’06), Malaysian International Fashion Festival (’08) and in publications such as Web Design Index Vol. 3, Monocle, Harpers Bazaar, Her World, Female.
Her latest exhibitions include Sewing Discord (’21) at the Esplanade and Coucou Bazar (’22) at the ICAS.
She holds a Master of Art (Design) and leads the Diploma in Fashion and Diploma in Creative Direction for Fashion at the School of Fashion, Faculty of Design, LASALLE College of the Arts.
